How ToolBuck works

Know the price before you pull the trigger. ToolBuck answers one question: is this price actually good?

Every Price Is Compared to Its Own History

A "sale" tag compares a price to a list price that few people ever pay. ToolBuck compares the current Amazon price to what that same tool has cost over the last 90 days. That is what "usual" means on this site.

The usual price is the 90-day median: the price the tool sat at or below for half of that time. The usual range is where the price sat for the middle half of that time. Time out of stock is left out of both.

One guard against a common trick: if a price was raised recently, the last 90 days make an ordinary price look like a discount. So ToolBuck also measures the price against the past year and reports whichever discount is smaller. A Buy has to be at least 15% below both.

What the Signals Mean

  • Buy. Sold by Amazon, at least 15% below its usual price, and below its usual range.
  • Fair. Anywhere inside its usual range, or within 15% of its usual price.
  • Wait. At least 15% above its usual price, and above its usual range.

Red means one thing here: the price is low. Every signal is also written out in words.

Third-Party Sellers

A Buy or Wait signal is given only after a check confirms that Amazon itself holds the buy box at that price. When a third-party seller has it, the listing is labeled, gets no signal, and is never counted as a deal, because a seller swap is not a discount.

How Fresh the Prices Are

Prices are rechecked in small batches through the day. Every price shows when it was last checked. Prices on Amazon change constantly, so confirm the live price before you buy.

What Is Tracked

DeWalt, Makita, Bosch and Klein tools, plus original-brand batteries and chargers. Third-party batteries and chargers are not listed.

How ToolBuck Makes Money

ToolBuck earns a commission on qualifying purchases as an Amazon Associate. That does not change what you pay, and it does not change which prices are called deals. The affiliate disclosure has the details.
